Scenic Artist 

Location: Paint Works 1065 Midland Avenue, Midland, PA 15059

Reports To: Scenic Charge Artist

Job Type: Part-Time

Pay Rate: $20.00/hour

Travel: Primary report location to the Paint Works shop but will need to travel to the Scenic Design and Technology Works shop and Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center at various times for meetings and scenic needs.

Job Summary:

The Scenic Artist is responsible for supporting the Scenic Charge through aiding the artistic vision of the scenic designer and director as it relates to all painting and scenic treatments for productions. This position will consistently follow high standards of quality and professional ethics when dealing with others and/or performing work activities.

Safety Responsibilities:

Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing proper PPE at all times 

  • Practicing safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury to self and others 

  • Maintaining a clean and hazard-free workspace 

  • Refraining from utilizing tools, or other items if you are not properly trained to do so 

  • Ensuring that all tools and supplies are stored properly 

  • Adhere to all safety protocol and procedures throughout the course of employment 

  • Work conditions involve exposure to paint elements (i.e., spray paint fumes) which require following basic safety precautions. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Scenic Charge and Associate Scenic Charge, apply scenic painting techniques and surface treatments, including but not limited to foam carving, texturing, aging, distressing, marbling, stenciling, and wood graining 

  • Ability to mix paint and color match.  

  • Alert Scenic Charge or Associate Scenic Charge if necessary supplies, materials, tools, and equipment need restocked. 

  • Responsible for helping maintain the cleanliness of all equipment and work spaces 

  • Work to ensure that all scenic treatments match the director and/or designer’s vision 

  • Keeps immediate supervisor promptly and fully informed of all problems or unusual matters of significance 

  • Accepts and performs other duties as assigned 

  • Regular and predictable attendance, punctuality, and strict adherence to the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center attendance policy are essential functions of this position 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficient in common scenic painting techniques including faux paint treatments, drop preparation and excution, and foam carving  

  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.   

  • Ability to remain calm and productive in difficult situations. 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. 

  • It is essential that this person has a high degree of integrity, honesty, and commitment to their team of fellow painters 

  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. Excellent verbal communication skills are essential. 

  • Excellent inter- and intra-personal relationship skills and the willingness to show empathy and understanding for various points of view 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient with Adobe PhotoShop a plus but not required

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma Required

Preferred Education:

  • BA or BFA in Technical Theater or minimum of 2 years related experience

Required Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work long hours, i.e. a 30 hour week with occasional weekends and evenings, as determined by the season’s schedule 

  • There is frequent need to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, carry items, use the hands and fingers, climb stairs and ladders, balance, kneel, occasionally lift objects up to 50 pounds, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. 

  • Ability to work in lifts at height. 

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus 

  • An essential function of this position is the employee’s attendance and physical presence within the shop. 


Responsibilities and time allocation may change over time to meet the needs of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center and can include other duties as assigned.
